It would be all too easy to say that Facebook's market meltdown is coming toan end. After all, Mark Zuckerberg's social network burned as much as $ 50 billion ofshareholders' wealth in just a couple months. To put that in context, since its debut onNASDAQ in May,Facebook has lost value nearly equal to Yahoo, AOL, Zynga, Yelp,Pandora, Open Table,Group on, Linked In, and Angie's List combined, plus that ofthe bulk of the publicly traded newspaper industry:

As shocking as this utter failure may be to the nearly 1 billion faithful Facebookusers around the world, it's no surprise to anyone who read the initial public offering(IPO)prospectus. Worse still, all the crises that emerged when the companydebuted-overpriced shares, poor corporate governance, huge challenges to the corebusiness, and a damaged brand- remain today. Facebook looks like a prime example ofwhat Wall Street calls a falling knife-that is, one that can cost investors their fingers ifthey try to catch it.

Start with the valuation(iti Ë). To justify a stock price close to the lower end ofthe projected range in the IPO, say $ 28 a share, Facebook's future growth would haveneeded to match that of Google seven years earlier. That would have requiredincreasing revenue by some80 percent annually and maintaining high profit marginsall the while.

That's not happening. In the first half of 2012, Facebook reported revenue of$ 2.24 billion, up38 percent from the same period in 2011. At the same time, thecompany's costs surged to $ 2.6 billion in the six-month period.

This SO-so performance reflects the Achilles' heel of Facebook's business model, which the company clearly stated in a list of risk factors associated with its IPO: ithasn't yet figured out how to advertise effectively on mobile devices, The number ofFacebook users accessing the site on their phones surged by67 percent to 543 millionin the last quarter, or more than half its customer base .

Numbers are only part of the problem. The mounting pile of failure creates anegative feedback loop that threatens Facebook's future in other ways. Indeed, themore Facebook's disappointment in the market is cataloged, the worse Facebook'simage becomes. Not only does that threaten to rub off on users, it's bad forrecruitment and retention of talented hackers, who are the lifeblood of Zuckerberg's

creation.

Yet the brilliant CEO can ignore the sadness and complaints of his shareholdersthanks to the super- voting stock he holds. This arrangement also was fully disclosedat the time of the offering. It's a pity so few investors apparently bothered to do theirhomework.

      1. What can be inferred about Facebook from the first paragraph?A. Its market meltdown has been easily halted.

B.It has increased trade with the newspaper industry.

C.It has encountered utter failure since its stock debut.

D,Its sharcholders have invested $ 50 bllion in a social network.

2. The crises Facebook is facing_

A.have been disclosed in the IPO prospectusB.are the universal risks Wall Street confrontsC.disappoint its faithful usersD.have existed for a long time

      3. To make its stock price reasonable, Facebook has to___

A.narrow the IPO price range

B.cooperate with Google

 C.keep enormously profitable

D.invest additional $ 2.6 billion

      4. It can be inferred from the context that the "Achilles' heel" (Line 1, Para. 5)refers to_

      A.deadly weaknessB. problem unsolvedC.indisputable factD.potential risk

      5. What effect will Facebook's failure in the market have?A.Its users' benefits will be threatened.

B.Talented hackers will take down the website.C.The CEO will hold the super- voting stock.

D.The company's innovation strength will be damaged

答案: CDCAD

      A Sense of Humor

Biologically, there is only one quality which distinguishes us from animals:the ability to laugh. In a universe which appears to be utterly devoid of humor, weenjoy this supreme luxury. And it is a luxury, for unlike any other bodily process, laughter does not scem to serve a biologically useful purpose. In a divide world, laughter is a unifying force, Human beings oppose each other on a great many issues.Nations may disagree about systems of government and human relations may beplagued by ideological factions and political camps, but we all share the ability tolaugh. And laughter, in turn, depends on that most complex and subtle of all humanqualities: a sense of humor Certain comic stereotypes have a universal appeal. Thiscan best be seen from the world- wide popularity of Charlie Chaplin's early films. Thelittle man at odds with society never fails to amuse no matter which country we comefrom. As that great commentator on human affairs, Dr. Samuel Johnson, onceremarked, ' Men have been wise in very different modes; but they have alwayslaughed in the same way.

A sense of humor may take various forms and laughter may be anything from arefined tingle to an earth quaking roar, but the effect is always the same. Humor helpsus to maintain a correct sense of values. It is the one quality which political fanaticsappear to lack. If we can see the funny side, we never make the mistake of taking

ourselves too seriously. We are always reminded that tragedy is not really farremoved from comedy, so we never get a lop sided view of things.

This is one of the chief functions of satire and irony. Human pain and sufferingare so grim; we hover so often on the brink of war; political realities are usuallyenough to plunge us into total despair. In such circumstances, cartoons and satiricalaccounts of somber political events redress the balance. They take the wind out ofpompous and arrogant politicians who have lost their sense of proportion. Theyenable us to see that many of our most profound actions are merely comic or absurd. We laugh when a great satirist like Swift writes about war in Gulliver's Travels.TheLilliputians and their neighbors attack each other because they can't agree which endto break an egg. We laugh because we meant to laugh; but we are meant to weep too.It is too powerful a weapon to be allowed to flourish.

The sense of humor must be singled out as man's most important quality becauseit is associated with laughter. And laughter, in turn, is associated with happiness.Courage, determination, initiative-- -these are qualities we share with other forms oflife. But the sense of humor is uniquely human. If happiness is one of the great goalsof life, then it is the sense of humor that provides the key.

[C] to take the wind out of politicians.

[D] to show too much grimness in the world.

9.What do we learn from the sentence it is too powerful a weapon to beallowed to flourish in totalitarian regimes?'

[A] It can reveal the truth of political events with satire.[B] It can arouse people to riot.

[C] It shows tragedy and comedy are related.

 [D] It can make people laugh.10.Who is Swift?[A] A novelist.[B]A poet.
